These artificial Intelligence systems can process information and adapt to promote change faster than any one person, or even a team of people, ever could. This speed is essential when a driver’s life could be on the line. The safety of drivers should be your number one priority for your fleet operations. According to The Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics (BITRE) 216 people died in 2017 from 196 fatal crashes involving heavy vehicles in Australia.

Artificial intelligence systems act to bring this number down in some large trucks, service vehicles, and passenger vehicles by gathering information on how we drive and teaching themselves to recognise new risks on the road. They can then alert drivers to danger or even assist in controlling the vehicle to avoid it.

Companies in our industry are using predictive analytics as a way of applying artificial intelligence and machine learning to improve the safety of their drivers. Artificial intelligence can indicate that a driver has a high likelihood of being involved in a preventable crash, allowing the company the opportunity to mitigate that potentially catastrophic event.

Several factors contribute to additional time on the road for drivers and therefore impact productivity which in turn affects the efficiency and effectiveness of your operations. These include:

• driver not having the correct or missing delivery information,
• driver dwell time, detention and other delays,
• mechanical delays and breakdowns,
• navigation to the shipper/receiver,
• loading of the truck/vehicle,
• ease of parking.

Driver not having the correct or missing delivery information

It is of utmost importance that you send your driver on the road with all of the information required to deliver to the receiver. This includes the correct address and the correct location to deliver at that address. Sending a driver to the front of a business when the delivery dock is at the back of the building can cause major disruption, particularly in a CBD when it could take considerable time on one ways streets to get to the correct location. Ensure you have addresses geocoded to the correct location can increase route plan accuracy and help reduce unplanned overtime and missed time windows.

Dwell time

Another major factor eating away at time and efficiency is dwell time. Dwell time is time spent in the same position, area, stage of a process. For example, when a driver is caught in heavy traffic or waiting at a dock. An FMCSA study* in 2018 revealed that a 15-minute increase in the average dwell time increases the average expected crash rate by 6.2%. The logic is that drivers who have been detained may drive while fatigued or try to make up lost time and income with unsafe driving practices. Another possible factor that could increase the crash rate is driver frustration.

There are also astronomical costs attributed to dwell time. According to Jack Levis, UPS’s director of process management, one minute per UPS driver per day over a year adds up to $14.5 million while one minute of idle per driver is worth $500,000 of fuel at the end of the year.

Mechanical delays and breakdowns

No one can sustain a business if their equipment is breaking down. If a truck breaks down on the road, there is time lost waiting for a mechanic or worse getting towed back to base and transferring the load to a different truck, if there is one available. So ensuring trucks have correct maintenance and using technology to monitor engine diagnostics is a beneficial way to keep your fleet on the road.

Navigation to shipper/receiver

Don’t rely on consumer level maps for your drivers to navigate to their destination. To ensure your drivers are on the most efficient route, you need to be using enterprise level maps. Enterprise map providers keep all of the data current. That means navigating on roads that really do exist, including new roads that have just opened up — and road names must be accurate to keep drivers from getting lost. We know a lost driver is a distracted driver. More importantly, a distracted driver is a dangerous driver. Additionally, enterprise maps will have the most up-to-date traffic information, so drivers will spend less time stuck in traffic if the routes navigate to a less busy road.

Loading of truck/vehicle

Just how efficiently and carefully your merchandise is organised and loaded into vehicles can make all the difference between time, profit and loss. Managing a growing range of incompatible container shapes and sizes, along with various vehicle types and sudden schedule changes, you can quickly find yourself tied up with one crisis after another. A truck driver loses time when merchandise is not loaded in order delivery from last order first to first order last. This saves considerable time on the road for the driver who needs to locate each parcel or box. Additionally, it’s important that the driver then keeps to the plan, so there are no issues with the order of the load in the truck.

Parking

What happens when a driver can’t find a park at a delivery point? They are inconvenienced and need to spend extra time scrambling to find one of a limited number of spots in a specific area to park while dropping off a delivery. This eats up time and contributes to driver frustration which can have a knock-on effect on driver safety. Using technology that stores information on parking in a specific area can be of great benefit.

Spring marks beginning of produce season, where the surplus of fresh fruits and vegetables that need to be quickly transported take precedence over other, less profitable freight. There are more orders of soft drink, food for barbecues, and alcoholic beverages in summer.

What can your company do to not just survive, but thrive, during this busy time?

Invest in real-time tracking technology

With last-mile delivery, the right technology can be a game changer.

The last mile is such a challenging leg of logistics and works on such tight schedules that knowing where your drivers — and your deliveries — are at any given minute can mean the difference between a day of on-time deliveries versus a day of deliveries that become delayed by more and more time as the hours progress.

Omnitracs’ Roadnet Anywhere allows fleet managers to easily import orders, route vehicles – while factoring in business constraints like time windows, execute same-day changes to assigned stops and stop sequence, send messages to drivers, and track drivers in real time.

On the driver side, drivers can access mobile trip management, proof of delivery tools, and messaging through the Roadnet Anywhere Mobile application, Premium Mobile — ensuring that changes and adjustments to the route can be made as needed, and that communication to the back office stays open throughout the day.

Build in more accurate time estimates to ensure deliveries are on time, even on the busiest days 

Consumers are becoming more and more demanding when it comes to deliveries — purchasing smaller quantities and wanting them more quickly. Most expect a delivery in no more than two days or quicker if possible. This consumer trend is bleeding into the B2B world, with many customers expecting the same experience from their distributors as they do outside of work.

Retailers are increasingly asking for smaller and more frequent deliveries. For distributors, smaller drop size and more frequent deliveries can quickly eat away at profits.

Instead of being able to group orders together geographically by day and sequencing them in the most optimal way each day, distributors often have to return to the same area they were just in the day before or backtrack to an area they just left earlier that day.

It can be tempting to cave into this pressure and promise overly ambitious delivery times. However, if you don’t account for the correct amount of time, you’ll find yourself with lots of angry customers when something like inclement weather or a bad traffic sets one of your drivers back.

Within Omnitracs Roadnet Anywhere routing, you can set the fixed service time per stop, to include various delays such as waiting for docks and lift wait times, and you can also set a planned variable service time per unit being handled, to more accurately account for time fluctuations driven by increases or decreases from volume. Once you have some actual service time information from historical stops, you can run Service Time Analyser. This tool analyses the actual service times to recommend and adjust the planned fixed service time per stop and variable service time per unit — which account for the various delays drivers typically encounter, minimising the chance of unplanned work hours by accurately estimating total route/trip time.

Drive time is a large part of every driver’s day. Roadnet Anywhere leverages historical traffic to determine the best time to start a route/trip. It accounts for how much traffic is anticipated as the route progresses to each stop throughout the day, in order to minimise the total amount of traffic encountered. This minimises the chance of unplanned work hours by accurately estimating total route/trip time.

These predictions are incorporated into an evolutionary algorithm, a type of Artificial Intelligence (AI), which utilises techniques like mutation and recombination, to determine the best stop assignment across multiple routes, and the most efficient and effective stop sequence within a route — to minimise kilometres and drive time, while still meeting customer delivery windows.

Your company almost certainly has huge volumes of data sitting unused; Put it to work through analysis

Every company collects a wide variety of data. There’s sales data, price data, delivery data — the list continues. More often than not, this data is collected, glanced at, and then sent to a folder or file on your company server where it sits unused.

Data collected from your routing and dispatching technology can be a goldmine for your company, helping you make operational decisions. Planned versus Actual (PvA) reporting, for example, shows you whether your company’s carefully-planned deliveries followed the schedule or not, and where inefficiencies may lie.

Through a business intelligence tool, managers can get a visual representation of data, showing trends such as drivers who idle frequently, missed time windows to your customers, and more. Each business requires different key performance indicators (KPIs) and with a tool like Omnitracs Roadnet Insight, you can create dashboards for things like average cost per kilometre, average cost per stop, etc.

Being able to dig deeper into trends and outliers is key. Insight enables customers to view data historically by business unit or region, and quickly click to drill down on KPIs to find the root cause of how transportation decisions affect their bottom line.
